I wouldnae neccessarily trust the stats from the Left Behind webpage; at least from my reading, it looked like it was the highest-selling series...of that one publisher.
Now then. I agree with your statement that a theocracy MAY be emerging. I don't believe that it is definitely emerging, though. I would state that the signs of a totalitarian state are more prevalent. This is in large part because Ryuu just posted a set of totalitarian governmental patterns on her LJ, and also because we're currently doing Soviet Russia in school.
